I also sent this video link to Sylvia http://ugandansandfriendsunite.blogspot.com/ but I love it so much. To hear about the hardships these refugees have faced- the persecution of a peoples for 60 years - yet they still have faith, and have named their place the place without evil despite all the atrocities that have occurred there. It is a very moving video

Research helps keep up my motivation

Hi All,
I am personally feel that I had stalled in the plans of getting this project of the ground - so in reflecting on where I am at, what it is I am doing, and trying to figure out where what and how from here, I went back to my project plan.
I began to re look at the research of why young people get involved with their community. Getting young people involved with their community leads to them being involved in civic and political issues later in their life(Hart, Donnelly, Youniss, and Atkins, 2007) .
I then found further inspiration in researching young people and collective action and came across two articles that look at the importance of 'HOPE'.
These articles by Courville and Piper and Peter Drahos identify that it is the companion of hope that gives momentum to social movement. The articles discuss the connection of hope,empowerment, ideas for change, and action.
Reading these articles has helped me become reinvigorated, just what I needed at this point.

Discussions Board Week 1

Hi all,
I agree the guest speaker was great. However for me the answer to Lynda's questions lay else where in todays class.
I was surprised by the amount of different study areas that is in this class. I could see clear and strong connections in some of them in the philosophy and others that I was not expecting.
Whilst I didn't talk to everyone, those that I did speak to it was clear that the motivation for community development is the similar to my own.
What makes me hopeful is the same thing that surprsed me- the varitey of study areas we come from. If in this arena of learning we can come together, learn, challenge, and grow then the future of community development holds great possibilities.
It brings closer the possiblities - not just here but world wide- of bring about change through community development.

Welcome to our discussion board. Staring at a blank page is not very inpsiring so I thought I'd start things off this week by posing a couple of reflective questions to you:
Thinking about our week 1 workshop:
1. What's something that surprised you? and/or
2. What's something that gives you hope?
